Kylie Rutwama's Story The onset of covid-19 and the global lockdowns that followed exposed how unskilled I was to survive another uncertain situation. I lost my job during the lockdown and then while sitting at home, I realized that I had no skill whatsoever to fall back on. I immediately wanted to change that. I envied how people in the tech sector kept working remotely amidst all the chaos and I immediately wanted a career switch. After some research, I found something I enjoy, I fell in love with frontend development.

🙋‍♀️ Kylie Rutwama's Motivation

I came across SheCodes while searching for resources and mentors to help me with my transition into Frontend development. I won't lie, I loved and still love the fact that not only is it free but also comes with an opportunity to learn and be guided by some of the best instructors in this field which is a blessing for someone like me who can't afford tech boot camp. I was also highly motivated by a success story of a 23-year-old African lady who landed a remote job as a junior developer in less than 6 months after joining SheCodes. I want to thrive as a front-end developer and be able to financially support myself.

🤹‍♀️ Kylie Rutwama's Hobbies

Uganda is blessed with two seasons i.e. the wet and dry seasons. When the rains set in, I love to spend my time indoors watching movies, documentaries and reading. When it is bright and sunny outside, I love restaurant hoping so I can try out different cuisines. I also love travelling and I'm currently learning how to swim.

🎯

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
