Sofia's Story My interest started in 2014, when Paraguay started to open its government data in open format. Since then I work in an NGO called reAcción (www.reaccion.org.py) that fights corruption in the education sector. Self-taught I learned about CSV, R and a bit of Python but my skills were never up to the challenges we wanted to solve, which is why despite supporting the development of technical tools, between the effort to support administrative, logistical and training students on issues related to transparency, citizen participation among others, so far I have not been able to dedicate myself or had the resources to study programming.

🙋‍♀️ Sofia's Motivation

For years I have been looking to dedicate myself to programming for the development of social technology but for reasons of work and lack of opportunities living in the interior of the country I have not been able to do it. I firmly believe that despite my age, this path is possible, with a lot of effort and the support of an organization like She Codes I could achieve it.

🤹‍♀️ Sofia's Hobbies

I enjoy reading, spending time with my kitties, watching series with my siblings and dancing. In the last few years, since I started working at reAcción I have realized that I love researching and analyzing data. Many times I have gotten up early in the morning to try to understand what are the purchases made with public resources. In many of these nights I have become stuck because my ability to analyze large amounts of data is limited, excel spreadsheets and google sheets have been my best friends on these nights. In this long process of self-learning about data I have been able to uncover and expose irregularities over the years, as well as support the development of our public resources monitoring tool called FOCO (www.foco.reaccion.org.py).

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
