Alejandra's Story I love mathematics, numbers and logic and had initially considered studying engineering, but now that I am learning physics I was thinking of alternate career paths for me as I don't enjoy physics as much. My cousin mentioned coding to me as she was learning herself (SheCodes Basic) and how she thought of me when doing the course because I love to learn and I am very curious. I started looking into it and it aligned with what I liked from engineering (understanding how things are built and doing something out of nothing/ developing an idea) without the physics aspect and with the logic that maths provides. It also ticks the boxes of being something that could help me save money while I work on the side from the safety of my house, and make me employable anywhere in the world.
My main motivation to learn how to code with SheCodes is because I am currently a sophomore in high school and I am starting to think about what life after school will look like for me. Living in Venezuela, there are no opportunities for young people like me. This is because my country suffers from hyperinflation and our home currency loses value by the second, but also because of political instability and rampant crime. Having said that, I need a tool that not only will allow me to earn and save money so I can afford to leave the country, but also skills that will be useful once I manage to leave. Coding would allow me to be employable abroad, and also start working while I finish my school and earn in a stable currency like USD$ so I have a chance of studying college abroad.
I love to go hiking in El Avila mountain (a landmark in my city); I enjoy reading, especially psychology books; and I am also starting to play piano again.
