Alwande's Story I first became interested in coding as a South African woman when I realized how much technology was shaping the world around me, but also how few women, especially in my community, were part of that change. Growing up, I was always curious about how things worked—whether it was fixing a broken phone or figuring out how apps on my phone were made. But I didn’t see many women in tech roles around me. It wasn’t until I started seeing women from all over the world, especially from Africa, creating incredible things with code, that I thought, “Why not me?” I wanted to be part of that change—empowered to build, create, and contribute to solutions that can improve lives in my own country and beyond. Coding became not just a skill, but a way for me to open new doors and challenge myself.
As a woman in South Africa, my motivation for learning to code with SheCodes would be to break down the barriers in a tech world that still feels mostly male-dominated. I see coding as a way to unlock career opportunities and build skills that can help me contribute to my community, whether it's through creating solutions for local challenges or starting my own tech-driven business. SheCodes offers a supportive space where I can grow and connect with other women, which makes it feel less daunting. Ultimately, it’s about gaining independence, confidence, and being part of a global movement that’s reshaping the future of tech.
