Anastasiia's Story I became interested in coding in high school where we were taught the basics of IT. I remember the thrill the first baby steps at coding gave me. However, later on I opted for the Humanities, and coding was not part of the curricula. I began to regard it as the mysterious field of enormous complexity that one can understand only after 4 years at college paired with sleepless nights of coding practice. When first free online classes for IT beginners were offered by learning sites, I saw them as an opportunity to find out if coding could possibly be an option for someone like me. It turned out that coding was not so out-worldly complex as I had feared. Yet, most online courses offer very theoretical approach with little practice. I am interested in learning to code with SheCodes because the program is focused and tailored to learner's needs avoiding the vague introductions and wordy theoretical passages.

🙋‍♀️ Anastasiia's Motivation

I used to believe that only people possessing certain in-born mathematical type of mindset could learn coding. And what is more, this area is teeming with gender stereotypes and there is a common belief that only men can be successful in coding, while roles in QA and support are left to women. I have heard some success stories of women in tech, but later found out that they had degrees in mathematics or computer science. So venturing into this new territory seemed a bit scary for me as I have been better at humanities, namely foreign languages. However, a free class with SheCodes has changed my views on the complexity of coding. In particular, the similarity between programming languages and human languages, especially English, intrigued me. I understood that with a clear goal and well-designed learning path in SheCodes I would be able to learn the basics. And if I try hard enough, I would be able to master coding. Learning how to code would be an opportunity to take a step forward in my career as I teach foreign languages and want to improve technology-enhanced learning experience for my students. Lack of technical knowledge hinders my progress as I currently have no tools to use my knowledge of teaching methods and experience in creating better learning apps for students.

🤹‍♀️ Anastasiia's Hobbies

I enjoy reading and studying foreign languages. Learning to code would be a chance to combine passion for linguistics and teaching languages with technical knowledge behind language-related IT products.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
