Dimpho's Story
As a final-year Bachelor of Arts student at Walter Sisulu University, majoring in Geography and English, my journey into coding began within my GIS coursework. Through this, I was introduced to JavaScript, database management, and spatial analysis tools like QGIS, Google Earth, and Google Earth Engine. Initially, I saw these as merely technical requirements, but as I delved deeper, I found that coding was the key to unlocking vast possibilities within data and map analysis.
Working with these tools, I realized how coding transforms raw data into meaningful visualizations, enabling us to analyze, predict, and address real-world issues. This ability to solve complex problems using code fascinated me, and I quickly found myself enjoying the logic and creativity behind it. Every new script and visualization deepened my passion, and I began to feel that this was the field where I truly belonged.
Coding in GIS taught me that technology could amplify the power of data, and I became inspired to continue learning and exploring further into programming. This experience has fueled my determination to pursue a career in coding, combining creativity with analytical skills to drive innovation in the digital world.
