Shirley's Story I first interacted with coding while in college where I did a business course with a bit of information technology. I focused on the business since I lacked a machine that I can use to code. I recently got a computer of my own and would wish to embark on a coding journey.

🙋‍♀️ Shirley's Motivation

When I joined my high school I was amazed to see computers and from then, I knew I wanted a career that involved computers, despite not knowing much about it. I come from a remote and marginalized community(Pokot) where STEM courses are regarded as mens'. For this reason, I plan to change the narrative by leading as an example and later on, giving back to my community through teaching girls how to code and mentoring them into STEM. In summary, I want be solve real-life problems through systems and teach girls from my village how to code.

🤹‍♀️ Shirley's Hobbies

I like interacting with my friends, participating in sporting and church activities, solving real-life problems e.g Math quizzes and also cooking.

SheCodes Foundation Mission

Women currently hold 25% of coding jobs and earn 30% less money than men. In most developing countries, more than 65% of women don't have bank accounts and cannot afford to invest in their education. Female refugees also don’t have many opportunities to invest in their education and improve their career horizon - they often work in unskilled, undervalued, and low-paid informal sectors.

SheCodes is here to help provide women in developing countries and women who are refugees with the opportunity to learn how to code for free. SheCodes offers a solid introduction to product development, product design and product management.
